JMJ Financials, a mid-market financial services firm, was losing competitive ground due to outdated risk reporting. IO Datalabs designed and built a real-time risk analytics platform that replaced manual spreadsheet workflows with automated data pipelines — cutting reporting latency from 48 hours to under 2 minutes.
The Challenge
JMJ Financials relied on a patchwork of Excel spreadsheets and legacy Access databases for risk reporting. Analysts spent two full days each cycle manually aggregating data from six different source systems, reconciling discrepancies, and formatting reports for compliance.
The 48-hour reporting lag meant the firm was always reacting to risk events rather than anticipating them. During a volatile quarter, this delay contributed to a $2.3M exposure that could have been mitigated with real-time visibility.
Regulatory pressure was also mounting — the firm needed SOC 2-compliant audit trails for every risk calculation, something impossible with their spreadsheet-based workflow.
Our Approach
We took a phased approach to minimize disruption to JMJ's ongoing operations while systematically replacing each manual touchpoint.
Discovery & Data Audit
Mapped all six source systems and documented the complete data lineage from raw inputs to final risk reports. Identified 23 manual transformation steps that could be automated.
Pipeline Architecture
Designed an event-driven data pipeline using AWS Lambda and dbt, with Snowflake as the analytics warehouse. Built automated reconciliation checks at each pipeline stage.
Dashboard & Reporting Layer
Built interactive React dashboards with role-based access controls. Implemented real-time alerting for threshold breaches and automated compliance report generation.
Migration & Hardening
Ran parallel operations for 3 weeks to validate accuracy. Conducted security audit and implemented SOC 2-compliant logging.
The Solution
The final platform ingests data from all six source systems via event-driven pipelines, with automated reconciliation at each stage. Risk calculations that previously required manual Excel formulas now run automatically in Snowflake using dbt-managed transformations.
The React-based dashboard provides real-time visibility into portfolio risk, with configurable alerts that notify analysts immediately when exposure thresholds are breached. Compliance reports that took a full day to compile are now generated on-demand with complete audit trails.
